Cultivating Purpose Through Life Coaching
The Unearthed Life
I want to take a moment to share the heart behind The Unearthed Life Podcast and the ministry of life coaching that flows from it. I believe that each one of us carries something unique to offer this world—because God doesn’t create sons and daughters without purpose or love infused into their lives. These gifts and callings are the seeds planted within us. We have the opportunity to cultivate and grow what God has placed in our hearts because He has given us everything we need to accomplish His will when we walk with Him. The Unearthed Life is about these seeds—rooted, surfacing, and ultimately bearing the fruit of who we are created to be. This is why I am passionate about life coaching! It gives me the space to walk alongside others, helping them discover who they are and who they are becoming. Everyone needs that!
This world can be confusing and lonely. It’s hard to know who you are and what steps to take, even in the day-to-day. This is where life coaching comes in. It’s a partnership that offers support, tools, and guidance to move forward with hope, creating a space where positive change can happen. Coaching isn’t about telling someone what to do—it’s about walking alongside them to uncover the answers that are already within, waiting to be unearthed.
The Beginning: The Garden and Our True Design
Our story starts in the Garden of Eden—where life began. We were created by the hand and love of God for a relationship with Him. But this story carries the weight of our humanity. The tree of life or the tree of knowledge—this choice altered everything.
“When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took some of its fruit and ate; and she also gave some to her husband with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves waist coverings.”
—Genesis 3:6-7
Here’s the question that stirs in my heart—did God change who we were when our eyes were opened to this fallen world? I don’t see that in scripture. God didn’t find Adam and Eve and modify their design to handle the brokenness. We were made for Eden, not for a world of pain and grief. But even in our fallen state, we are still made in His image, still bearing seeds of purpose and potential. These seeds remain intact—ready to grow, strengthen, and flourish. However, they now battle against sin and the external weight of a fallen world. This space of confusion and loss is where we must invite God to reside and fill.
Cultivating Seeds of Purpose
We are all created to desire joy, love, and goodness, even in the face of trials. Our Father, in His infinite wisdom, has given us seeds of strength and purpose that He desires to bring to the surface of our lives. But we need to identify these seeds, nurture them, and grow them in alignment with God’s will. This is where courage and confidence are born. So, I ask—what seeds are you watering? What kind of fruit do you desire to bear in your life with Christ?
“Grapes are not gathered from thorn bushes nor figs from thistles, are they? So every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot produce bad fruit, nor can a bad tree produce good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. So then, you will know them by their fruit.”
—Matthew 7:17-20
Life Coaching: Partnering in Growth and Change
So how do we cultivate this life of bearing good fruit? In life coaching, there are foundational principles that can help anyone, regardless of their starting point, to move toward positive change. Many people wonder—How is life coaching different from therapy or counseling? Counseling often focuses on processing past trauma and experiences, while life coaching looks at the present and the future. It acknowledges the past but creates space to explore change and pursue God-given dreams and desires.
Coaching draws on principles such as:
✅ Curiosity through Questions: Asking thoughtful, open-ended questions to encourage reflection and awareness.
✅ Active Listening: Truly hearing and understanding what’s beneath the surface.
✅ Creating Accountability: Encouraging follow-through and providing support along the journey.
✅ Processing Ideas: Offering a safe space to explore and refine possibilities.
The goal? To cultivate a partnership that helps clients discover what was already within them—seeds waiting to be unearthed—so they can step confidently toward their goals and dreams. A life coach, in many ways, holds the watering can, helping these seeds grow.
Jesus: The Ultimate Life Coach
What does this look like as believers? It’s all rooted in Jesus. From the very beginning, the story of creation unfolds to Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection—redeeming us from the brokenness of the world and ourselves. He lived fully, showing us how to walk in truth and grace. As I’ve deepened my understanding of life coaching, I’ve realized that I’ve heard these principles before—from Jesus Himself. He is the ultimate example of what it looks like to guide, encourage, and empower.
Let’s break it down:
➡️ Curiosity and Asking Questions: Jesus asked over 300 open-ended questions throughout the Gospels. He didn’t need answers—He wanted people to search their hearts and discover the truth for themselves. His questions created space for reflection, growth, and self-discovery.
➡️ Discipleship and Mentoring: Jesus invited His disciples to follow Him, teaching them how to live a life rooted in God. His teachings—deny yourself, serve others, choose the narrow path—were not commandments but invitations to choose a life aligned with God’s will.
➡️ Being a Good Listener: “Consider carefully how you listen” (Luke 8:18). Jesus was a master at listening—not just to words but to hearts. He asked questions, inferred what was unsaid, and responded with compassion and understanding.
➡️ Accountability and Responsibility: “So then each one of us shall give account of himself to God.” (Romans 14:12). Jesus models accountability, calling us to take ownership of our lives and actions. Sharing life with others who know our hearts and creates space for growth and change.
What Seeds Are You Growing?
As we walk this journey of life, the seeds God has placed within us long to grow and flourish. Life coaching is a powerful tool that helps unearth these seeds, nurture them, and bring them to the surface. But ultimately, Jesus is the source of life. He is the Master Gardener, calling us to abide in Him so that we bear good fruit.
So, I ask again—what seeds are you watering today? What fruit are you cultivating for a life rooted in Christ?
